![]() ![]() If the workflow is somehow closed, or you use general files types (Like PNG, JPG and TIF for photo images) you are fine using different programs.Ĭompatibility has increased a bit more after the years, and the usage of output formats like PDF is more solid now than a decade ago.Ī specific scenario where is totally suitable to use Open Source programs is in Institutions, where you can have a "Communications Department", elementary schools, etc and you need to use the software on several computers. This is probably the main reason people do not choose another platform and this applies to a lot of things, for example, social media. ![]() The first point to consider is the ecosystem the designer lives in.Īn obvious reason not to choose different applications is if it has a strong dependency on external assets. ![]() This is an oldie, but I'll add my 2 cents. If my main job was graphic design I would definitely get Photoshop as soon as I can (maybe do a few small projects with GIMP so I can afford it). So it all boils down to how much money, quality and your time's worth - if you only do simple work, GIMP can do well or you are an hobbyist and your time is essentially free then you can't compete with GIMP's price - but if you need a powerful tool and your time is expensive (and if you have any success as a professional graphic designer, then your time should be expensive) GIMP doesn't look so free anymore.Īnd that is without taking into account you might someday need some plugin that is only available for photoshop, need to exchange PSD files with other designers or hire employees and have to train them to use GIMP. Photoshop has more features, produces better results, has more plugins and virtually all graphic designers know how to use it - it's also very expensive.įor the same amount of work you will have better results in Photoshop - that means that if you use GIMP you will either produce lower quality work or need more time. GIMP and Inkscape are both very nice and quite powerful - but if you compare GIMP to photoshop its obvious GIMP is not on the same level (I've never used Illustrator so I can't compare it with Inkscape). I am not a graphic designer but I do some small graphics work occasionally and I use GIMP and Inkscape. ![]()

![]() ![]() Second-quarter data from the Fed shows the average rate for them is 22.16%. If, however, you just look at the universe of people who actually do pay interest because they carry a balance from month to month, their average rate is even higher. Nevertheless, that is still more than 6 percentage points higher than the average recorded at the start of last year.īut the 20.44% average doesn’t tell the whole story, since it’s the overall average for all cardholders, including those who are never charged interest because they pay their bill in full and on time every month. So it’s not surprising that card rates in the past year have been trending at around 20-year highs.Īs of July 19, the average credit card interest rate is 20.44%, down slightly from the 20.58% recorded the week before, according to. When Fed rates go up, so do credit card rates. And you can get shorter-term CDs that pay between 4% and 5%, with some even paying up to 5.35%, according to. While the average rate on a one-year CD was only paying 1.58% as of July 17, according to Bankrate, there are some one-years on offer that pay well over 5%. If you have enough in savings that you can leave some untouched for anywhere from one month to a year, you’ll be able to lock in a high rate by putting some money in a certificate of deposit at an FDIC-insured bank. By contrast, the largest banks, like JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, still pay next to nothing - think 0.01%. The national average savings account rate was just 0.52% as of July 17, according to Bankrate.īut your money can earn you far more in online high-yield savings accounts at FDIC-insured banks, many of which are paying between 4.5% and 5% as of Wednesday. “We may be waiting for a protracted period of cooling inflation before we see a halt to interest rate hikes,” said Michele Raneri, vice president and head of US research and consulting at TransUnion.Įither way, here are three ways the Fed’s latest hike announced Wednesday could either take a bite out of your wallet or benefit you. So when might the Fed be willing to stop raising rates? “Despite the euphoria over inflation coming down from 9.1% to 3% in the past year, the trend on core inflation readings - which exclude volatile food and energy components to provide a better read on inflation trends - is much less impressive,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at. In either case, both numbers are still above the Fed’s 2% target, which suggests the US central bank may not be done quite yet. And the Fed’s preferred inflation measure - the core Personal Consumption Expenditures Index - inched down to 4.6% in its latest reading. ![]() Based on the latest reading, inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index grew at just 3% in June. The Fed’s aggressive campaign is intended to beat down inflation. That’s how fast the Federal Reserve has hiked its overnight bank lending rate, which directly or indirectly affects many consumer rates. ![]() ![]() One minute the game will be dropping a line from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, the next it’ll be doing an extended riff on Twin Peaks, or pulling poses from 90s-era Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. "That weighs at least five pounds!" Timanus agreed and okayed Follmer's Mustang. Timanus temporarily cleared the scoops and sent the Mustang to the scales, where it weighed 3,195 pounds - 5 pounds underweight. Ford Trans-Am coordinator Fran Hernandez made a plea for the brake scoops on the grounds of driver safely. Follmer's number 16 car rolled into the inspection area first and was cited for too-short windshield retaining strips and brake ducts from the headlight openings. First in line were three Bud Moore Boss 302s, two numbered 15 and one numbered 16. Friday's Inspection had progressed smoothly, with Jim Hall's Camaro and Mark Donohue's Javelin approved with minor changes, but on Saturday morning the Inspection crew, led by new SCCA technical inspector John Timanus, found numerous infractions. The tone for the 1970 Trans-Am was set at Saturday's tech inspection before Sunday's Laguna Seca Trans-Am. For the whole story, we invite you to read the entire chapter on the Trans-Am Championship Mission in the book, which includes details on the new-for-1970 Competition, Rules Changes and Testing before the “End of Everything” came for corporate involvement in motorsports competition on November 20, 1970.Īpril 19, 1970: Laguna Seca Trans-Am, Monterey, California It is reprinted here with permission from author Donald Farr. To mark this historic victory, we’re retracing the 1970 Trans-Am season race-by-race though the following excerpt from the hardcover book, Boss Mustang: 50 Years (1st Edition – Motorbooks, 2019). Despite brisk early sales and good reviews, sales of the new Thunderbird couldn’t justify continued production, and Ford discontinued it again in mid-2005.Editor’s Note: It’s now been 50 years since Parnelli Jones piloted his Mustang Boss 302 race car to the 1970 Trans-Am season series championship for Ford Motor Company. The luxury retailer Neiman Marcus offered an early special edition version in their 2000 Christmas catalog, priced at just under $42,000 their stock of 200 sold out in two hours and 15 minutes. In 2002, however, in an attempt to capitalize on car buyers’ nostalgia, the company launched production of a retro T-Bird, a two-seater convertible that took some of its styling from the original classic. Thunderbird sales slowed during the 1990s, and Ford discontinued the Thunderbird in 1997. Kennedy had already included 50 Thunderbirds in his inaugural procession in 1961, and a T-Bird would also feature prominently in the 1973 film “American Graffiti.” The Beach Boys elevated the Thunderbird to pop- culture-icon status in 1964 by including it in the lyrics of their hit single “Fun Fun Fun” (“she’ll have fun, fun, fun ’til her daddy takes the T-Bird away”). In 1958, to satisfy critics who thought the T-Bird was too small, Ford released a four-seater version with a roomier trunk and bucket seats. In addition to the powerful V-8 engine that Ford was known for, the Thunderbird boasted all the conveniences consumers had become accustomed to, including a removable hard convertible top, soundproofing and the accessories standard to most Ford cars. The success of the Thunderbird led Chevrolet to continue production of (and improve upon) the Corvette, which soon became a tough competitor in the sports car market. The 1955 Thunderbird was an immediate hit, selling more than 14,000 that year (compared to just 700 Corvettes). The undeniably sleek Corvette’s initial engine performance was relatively underwhelming, but it was gaining lots of attention from the press and public, and Ford was motivated to respond, rushing the Thunderbird to the market in 1955. General Motors built the first American sports car: the Chevrolet Corvette, released in 1953. The last Thunderbird, Ford Motor Company’s iconic sports car, emerges from a Ford factory in Wixom, Michigan on July 1, 2005.įord began its development of the Thunderbird in the years following World War II, during which American servicemen had the opportunity to observe sleek European sports cars. ![]() ![]() The bone had its own unique microbiome, which could cause confusion as to whether proteins and possible genetic material belonged to the dinosaur itself or to bacteria that had come to reside within it during the fossilization process. ![]() The researchers said that they unearthed DNA inside the bone, but it was from lineages of bacteria and other microorganisms that had not been seen before. Hot on the heels of Bailleul’s paper-and inspired by the controversy over what the biomolecules inside dinosaur bones represent-a separate team, led by Princeton University geoscientist Renxing Liang, recently reported on unexpected microbes found inside one from Centrosaurus, a horned dinosaur of similar age to Hypacrosaurus. The question is whether these proteins and other traces are really what they seem. “I think exceptional preservation is really more common than what we think, because, as researchers, we have not looked at enough fossils yet,” Bailleul says. And that would mean there may be an entire world of biological information experts are only just getting to know. If upheld, Bailleul and her colleagues’ findings would indicate that biochemical traces of organisms can persist for tens of millions of years longer than previously thought. ![]() Still, these potential tatters of ancient DNA would be far older (by millions of years) than the next closest trace of degraded genetic material in the fossil record. At best, their biological makers seem to be degraded remnants of genes that cannot be read-broken-down components rather than intact parts of a sequence. Such potential tatters of ancient DNA are not exactly Jurassic Park–quality. Yet first, paleontologists need to confirm that these possible genetic traces are the real thing. The fossil record would not be bones and footprints alone: it would contain scraps of the genetic record that ties together all life on Earth. DNA from nonavian dinosaurs would add a wealth of new information about the biology of the “terrible lizards.” Such a find would also establish the possibility that genetic material can remain detectable not just for one million years, but for tens of millions. Working on more recently extinct creatures-such as mammoths and giant ground sloths-paleontologists have been able to revise family trees, explore the interrelatedness of species and even gain some insights into biological features such as variations in coloration. Recovering genetic material of such antiquity would be a major development. In a study published earlier this year, Chinese Academy of Sciences paleontologist Alida Bailleul and her colleagues proposed that in that fossil, they had found not only evidence of original proteins and cartilage-creating cells but a chemical signature consistent with DNA. This speed would mean paleontologists can only hope to recover recognizable DNA sequences from creatures that lived and died within the past 6.8 million years-far short of even the last nonavian dinosaurs.īut then there is the Hypacrosaurus cartilage. Findings from a 2012 study on moa bones show an organism’s genetic material deteriorates at such a rate that it halves itself every 521 years. Genetic material is not supposed to last over such time periods-not by a long shot. But it may contain something never before seen from the depths of the Mesozoic era: degraded remnants of dinosaur DNA. ![]() The object is a just a scant shard of cartilage from the skull of a baby hadrosaur called Hypacrosaurus that perished more than 70 million years ago. Your inserts are failing because there is no row (a, b) with values (1, 2).The purpose of AUTOINCREMENT is to prevent the reuse of ROWIDs from previously deleted rows. The AUTOINCREMENT keyword imposes extra CPU, memory, disk space, and disk I/O overhead and should be avoided if not strictly needed. INTEGER PRIMARY KEY is enough to guarantee automatically generated values. So I guess I just need assurance that this is and will be impossible by design. Of course, I could have created a composite primary key in the parent, but then I wouldn't be able to use AUTOINCREMENT. It's mentioned that parent and child keys must have the same cardinality in foreign key documentation although with all the examples I still kinda hoped that as I can include a unique constraint on a composition of primary key and column I can make it work. That's just letting stuff accumulate in your physical or virtual receptacles like inboxes, voice mail, or e-mail. Regularly reviewing your system to make sure your action items and project lists are up to dateĬollecting stuff is easy. There are four major parts to the GTD system:Ĥ. Again, there's tons more detail, tricks, and tips in the book, but I'll try to capture the gist of it. The tough (and in some places nonintuitive) part is the implementation. That's all well and good, but it's probably not beyond the ken of your average retarded monkey. I like to think of the system as an artificial, external, and infinitely scalable attention span that you can connect to and disconnect from as needed. If you're confident that your other commitments or to-dos are safely stored away somewhere and will not be lost or buried out of sight, you can devote all your attention, time, and mental energy to one thing before knocking it out and moving on to the next. Dumping everything out of your short-term memory allows you to do something that's very critical to productivity: focus on one thing at a time. In short, GTD focuses on getting "stuff" -commitments, to do items, reminders to gather information, requests for information or actions, etc.- out of your short-term memory and into a physical, highly organized system that will remind you of the right stuff at the right time. Allen gets touchy-feeling in a few places (such as discussing prioritization or project definition) but the vast majority of the book takes a very practical approach to digging yourself out of whatever mountain of commitments you've gotten yourself under and how to stay on top of it once you get there. I don't need nor want that, so you can cram it with walnuts, buddy. To those authors I'd like to say the following: No. It seems like other self-help books in this vein that I've perused are all about inspiration, defining values, motivating yourself, getting in touch with your inner being and letting loose the full potential of you. What I really liked about Allen's work is that it's very straight forward and focused on implementation. This approach to maximizing productivity is popular among the nerdegalian, probably because of its minimum bullshit approach to actually processing, classifying, and executing what the author David Allen calls "stuff to do." This book discusses the GTD system in its entirety and, more importantly, teaches you how to put it in place. Ironically, looking in to the GTD (Getting Things Done) system has been bouncing around in the back of my head as something to do for quite some time now. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The snow, the presents and the Christmas tree all come together to create a beautiful environment to celebrate the festival with enthusiasm and vigor.
